Spike Maguire |
16" x 12" - oil on canvas - nfs |
My father, George Barrie "Spike" Maguire was born in 1909, one of ten children, the son of Irish immigrant parents. His father worked as a chaufeur (think of horse-drawn traps) for a wealthy Narberth publisher named George Barrie. (Yes, the newborn boy was named after the boss.) Spike died at 50 of a heart attack and left behind a 45-year old widow and five children, aged 2 to 20. I painted this portrait as a gift for my brother Steve in gratitude for all that he has done for our family over the years, fulfilling what he believes our father would have wanted. By the way, The Burro of Narberth has written several essays about Spike. You can read them by clicking HERE. |
