St. Mullins, in County Carlow across the river from County Kilkenny, is just about the sweetest, dreamiest get-away spot in Ireland. We stayed for several days at the Old Grainstore Cottages (highly recommend) on the banks of the River Barrow. Although twenty or thirty miles inland from the coast at Waterford, the Barrow rises and falls with the tides, its small rapids appearing and disappearing twice a day. The banks are lined with Weeping Willows, and there is a long beautiful walk along the river—and occassional canal—all the way to the market town of Graiguenamanagh. (Got that? It's greg-na-man-na) Really, it is a special place. the river is a fisherman's paradise as can be seen in this painting of an Irishman, who we decided had left work early and instead of stopping off at the pub, had come here on the way home, to spend a hour or so in paradise.
